Arguing with someone to convince them of your viewpoint is like pouring gasoline on a fire to put it out. It is not them you must convince of anything it is you that you must convince your position warrants action. Stop arguing and clear things up calmly and move forward or stop arguing and just move on.
There are no lessons only examples. Examples are just examples with no energy until we place our own energy on them. It is how we choose to engage with them that will make them relevant or not relevant, either producing a lesson or just advancing awareness. Engage only enough to gain awareness but not to suffer. If you can keep a neutral emotion then you can see the example for what it is and then move on having saved the lesson but gaining awareness.
